Case Study: The Coalition for a 21st Century Postal Service Explainer Video

National Trade Association The Coalition for a 21st Century Postal Service represents the business mailing community and its associated supply chain. Its mission is to educate and advocate for a strong, sustainable U.S. Postal Service (USPS). The organization’s executive director planned an update to congressional staffers and needed a compelling visual to kick off their in-person training.

The Challenge

The U.S. Postal Service’s universal mandate is to deliver the mail to everyone across 50 states and beyond to cities, towns, military bases and distant territories. The USPS supports a vast postal-reliant industry with revenues of $1.6 trillion and employs more than 7 million workers nationwide. This means that businesses of every size, the national defense, associations, and individuals depend on USPS for affordable, reliable service.

But explaining the USPS’s challenges is not easy. The U.S. Postal Service has faced serious financial challenges in recent years. Falling revenue, growing competition, digital diversion, aging infrastructure, and inflation threaten this American institution. Despite $70 billion in cash and balance sheet adjustments from Congress over the past three years, necessitated by COVID and more, regulators predict the USPS may lose as much as $8 billion this year, and perhaps even more next.

This is why they needed to communicate how Congress can get involved to support the U.S. Postal Service beyond the 2022 Postal Service Reform Act. An educational explainer video helped outline key items to consider including:

  • Allowing the U.S. Postal Service more latitude in investing its funds,
  • Returning overpayments by USPS to the Civil Service Retirement Fund, and
  • Modernizing the authority of the Postal Regulatory Commission

How Intelligent Evolution Helped

The Coalition for a 21st Century Postal Service hired Intelligent Evolution to create an explainer video similar in style to a previous video. We interviewed the executive director, conducted research, and drafted a script to start. Our client gave us two rounds of feedback to get the script just how they wanted it.

Then, we concepted individual scenes with specific art direction alongside the script and sourced logos and sample images for each scene. After our client commented on how each scene would look, we hired an artist to create a storyboard for our client.

Then we selected several voiceover samples and hired a female voiceover artist to record the background track to match each scene. Then, we put the video together with the scenes, animations, and an original voiceover.

After another round of quality control and edits from the client, we finalized the video. The explainer video was uploaded to the client’s YouTube site and will be embedded on their website.

The Results

This explainer video was used to brief congressional staffers about the U.S. Postal Service as well as what actions that can be taken to help the organization return to financial stability, since they operate largely without government financial support and are heavily regulated.

Now, The Coalition for a 21st Century Postal Service has an updated video that explains the importance of the postal service and how Congress and the public can get involved to ensure it can meet its ambitious 10-year strategic plan: Delivering for America.

The video can now be used in the trade association’s ongoing outreach to its members and partnering organizations to increase the impact and reach of their advocacy efforts. It will also be a nice addition to the association’s website and help with search engine optimization efforts.
